Why one ceiling light never feels cozy

A single bright overhead floods a room flatly — including the mess. Several low, warm lamps make soft pools of light and gentle shadow, and that's what your eye actually reads as calm.

The number on the bulb box matters

If a room feels subtly cold despite nice lamps, it's usually the bulb. Look for "warm white," around 2700K — and avoid "daylight" bulbs in any room you relax in.

Give the bedroom the softest light in the house

It's the room most about winding down, so it deserves the lowest, warmest light you own — enough to read by, not enough to wake you up.

Turn on a lamp before you need it
